Arsenal Overview

In mostly monarchical possession until 1630, Highbury, which was named after a manor house placed on high ground, became known to Londoners as a regular source of water to the City from the 15th century. In 1666, 200,000 people huddled together in Highbury Fields to escape the Great Fire and from the late 18th century the first attempts at house building were made in these parts.

In 1910 the Chairman of Fulham Football Club, Henry Norris, was called in to help an ailing south London club called Woolwich Arsenal. His initial plan was to merge the two sides, was rejected, and Woolwich went from bad to worse. In 1913 they endured the worst season in the history of top league football, were duly relegated and Norris took drastic action.

Quite why he chose Highbury as a new home has stayed a mystery. But he clearly saw a move as profitable, their fortunes picked up straight away, the renamed Arsenal finished third in the league, they bought the site outright in 1925 and they have been here ever since.
